Russian-Chinese Society

The Russian – Chinese Society was one of the first to be established in the Soviet Union in 1957.The Chairman of the Board is an academician, the secretary of the history department of the USSR presidium, Tihvinsky S.L.

The Chairman of the St. Petersburg department is the secretary of the executive committee of the Leningrad suburbs, Pilin V.V.

Nowadays the Society includes 20 primary organizations, such as “Leningrad Metal Factory”, the abrasive factory “Ilich”, “Sevcable”, St.Petersburg State University, Polytechnical University of Kalinin, and the State Hermitage. It also contains schools, vaccational schools, scientific and cultural organizations.

The Society’s activity:

• Reception of Chinese delegations and public individuals ( in 1989 –6 delegations, including space specialists headed by the member of the board of the Society, Van Ungy, visited Leningrad );

• Work with expatriate’s community of Chinese students ( there are also visits to the primary organizations, theaters and museums, trips to other towns, round tables with the participation of outstanding scientists and history, economy specialists);

• Different exchanges with China, in particular Shanghai;

• Cooperation with St. Petersburg’s public. For 30 years the Society has done a lot to maintain the cooperation and friendship between China and Russia.

In 1989 a great celebration devoted to the 40th anniversary of China took place in St. Petersburg. The exhibition was held in the public library of Saltikov-Shedrin. The House of friendship organized six colourful photo-exhibitions by the General Consulate of China.

The annual event “the spring’s day” held by the House of Friendship is a great success among the citizens of St. Petersburg. We can’t but mention a huge impact of Sinologists of the St.Petersburg State University, who report about China in the primary organizations.
